Annotation #3
In this quote, Hosseini personifies Kabul and it makes it seem like Kabul has feelings even though it's only a city. Hosseini calls Kabul "an old, forgotten friend" and it shows how no one has really been to Kabul anymore. In addition, it shows the chaos that is existing in Afghanistan because Kabul was once prosperous and rowdy. Now it is "forgotten" because there is violence and political instability, so everyone is escaping from Afghanistan and Kabul. Hosseini also described Kabul as "homeless and destitute". This means that Kabul has no shelter or subsistence. Kabul, Afghanistan's capital is in ruins because of the constant violence. It has no shelter from the bullets and warfare. It also shows a lack of life in Kabul because there is a lack of subsistence which is a lack of crops and food. Food and plants represent life and hope, but Kabul even lacks this tiny hope and Hosseini may be trying to communicate to the readers that Kabul needs a lot of reconstruction and care to recover from all of the violence that has been happening in Afghanistan.
