Annotation #4

In this scene, Hosseini is using imagery to evoke fear in the readers. Hosseini is describing the clothing attire of the Taliban and it represents the strict rules that Afghanistan was placed under, after the Taliban came into power. Hosseini describes the Taliban that "rhythmically swatted the side of the truck with [a whip]" and it shows how the Taliban were enforcing the rules that they wanted Afghans to follow. For example, women should not be showing off their skin and they had to wear burquas if they were to go outside. This represents the social issue of how Afghans did not have any privacy during this time period. The whip also represents the abuse that happens in Afghanistan because the Afghans that did not comply to the rules were punished. For example, if a woman committed adultery, the woman and the adulterer would be brought outside to the public and whipped by the Taliban.
